Abstract

School garden lessons, introduced in the GDR in 1963/64, initially combined polytechnic education with socialist ideology. Today, it is no longer a separate school subject in Saxony, but is integrated into primary school science lessons. The evaluation of a school gardening seminar for student teachers shows that practical gardening not only imparts specialist knowledge, but also the ability to reflect and motivation. These skills are crucial if the prospective teachers are to pass on sustainable values to future generations as change agents.
